There are many causes of low self esteem, including basing self-worth on achievements and success, being emotionally or physically abused, and going through puberty. Some people have low self esteem because they cannot own or do certain things. Other people have low self esteem because of an abusive relationship. Still, the causes of low self esteem in some people, especially preteens and teenagers, can be puberty. A common misconception is that bullies have low self esteem because someone once bullied them; while sometimes true, this is usually not the case.
Can Self Value Affect Self Esteem?
Sometimes people base their self worth on material possessions and success at personal goals. Failure is bound to occur at some point for any number of reasons, though. These people are then left disappointed, hurt, and with lower self esteem than before. The solution is not to base self worth on grades and expensive clothing.

Abuse of any kind causes low self esteem in people of all ages. Emotional, physical, and verbal abuse by family members, friends, or even strangers can have a significant negative effect on a person’s self esteem. The abuse can also be racist or sexist in nature. Depending on the type of abuse and the victim’s location, the abuse may be against the law and reportable to law enforcement.
Do Body Changes and Hormones Affect How People See Themselves?
Puberty is one of the common causes of low self esteem because children often feel insecure about their bodies during this time. Children often compare their bodies to other people, such as friends and celebrities. When children do not feel positive about how they compare, it can result in them feeling bad about themselves. One reason why this issue is prevalent is because different people experience puberty at different rates. Differences in age and the pace of puberty presents children with many opportunities to feel physically different from other people in their peer group.

Financial difficulties can cause people to have low self esteem. When people are unable to maintain a comfortable income source, they may feel bad about themselves. People should try to separate their sense of self worth from material accomplishments.
Do Bullies Have Low Self Esteem?
Contrary to popular belief, bullies often have high self esteem. Their true reasons for bullying people depends on the bully, but it is usually not because of self esteem problems. Poor anger management, a feeling of superiority over others, and a lack of certain social skills are common causes of bullying. In some cases, however, the stereotype that bullies bully because they were once bullied is true.
